How To Avoid An Eventual Accident

Introduction

Statistics suggest that almost every driver has an accident while going in reverse at one point in their lifetime. Will your time come soon? There is a technological solution in limiting or eliminating this issue all together. Car parking sensors allow for safer parking and driver awareness. Driving mishaps that involve the drivers visibility being limited can be costly and dangerous to the driver and pedestrians as well.

Harrowing Statistics

Each year there are over 300,000 accidents reported in the U.S. due to reversing. The Department of Transportation states that 27% of car accidents involve at least one of the cars going in reverse. These accidents total to a number of over 1.3 billion dollars costing individuals and insurance companies.

Kidsandcars.org is an organization set on limiting and eventually eradicating the harmful effects cars have on individual safety. They report that car reversal caused 91 child deaths in 2003. The Department of Transportation asserts that 70% of all accidents can be avoided if the vehicle is equipped with some sort of sensor.

How it Works

A parking sensor is prompted when employing reverse gear. A small but highly intelligent sensor affixed to the rear of the vehicle sends and measures magnetic waves that interact with objects and alert the driver of their presence. An internal device educates the driver of the distance between the object and the rear of the vehicle.

Parking Tips

-Be aware of the possible presence of people (especially small children) when reversing
-Watch both sides of the rear of the vehicle while reversing
-Make sure your vehicle is parked between designated lines in parking lots
-If driving with a passenger, have them get out and guide you while parallel parking
-Car sensors are available for the front and rear of vehicles; it would be wise to invest in one or both
-Research sensor purchases and only buy reliable brands

Choosing A Good Fuel Card

For a variety of reasons, from conservation to price, its more important than ever to think about your cars fuel consumption. With the current concerns about fuel shortages and rising prices, you probably think more about the amount and expense of fuel you put into your vehicle than you used to. Because of this, many gas or petrol stations have made efforts to introduce quality fuel or gas card programs. Consumers are more aware that ever of gas prices, and every little bit of money saved is an incentive.

There are several types of gas cards available. Some are geared towards individuals and work like credit cards. Others are for businesses, and work only in certain locations or for certain vehicles. Gift fuel cards are also available in a variety of money amounts –and while a fuel card may not be the most romantic gift youll ever give, it just might be the most useful.

Gas Card Options

Most private fuel cards work just like credit cards. You simply apply for the card online or in your favorite gas station. There are several benefits to owning a gas card, and these benefits depend entirely on the kind of card you choose. Some, such as the Discover Open Road card, work as both regular credit cards and gas cards. These cards tend to give you a cash back bonus on all gasoline or automobile maintenance purchases. In the case of Discover Open Road, this bonus is 5%. The benefit to this kind of card is that it can be used at any gas or petrol station.

Others, such as the Chevron Texaco Basic Card, offer you a 5$ per month credit when you fill up your tank using the card at least twice each billing period. This card also offers a premium plan for $25 per month. This plan works just as the basic plan, but also offers discounts on hotels, car rentals, flights, etc. Most gas or petrol station offer cards with similar plans.

Another good option when it comes to fuel cards is pre-paid cards. Pre-paid fuel cards allow you to put a certain amount of money on a card, then use it like a credit card. Similar to pre-paid calling cards, pre-paid gas cards make great gifts, and also work well for business purposes or employee perks.

Another option for businesses which pay to fuel company-owned vehicles is the business fuel card. Business gas cards allow businesses to control and analyze fuel expenses. Most of these cards, such as the Chevron Texaco Business Card, offer customized cards for each driver and vehicle, as well as itemized statements and reports to help businesses analyze and track fuel purchases throughout their business.

Whether looking for a way to pay for a teenage childs fuel, or to save some money on skyrocketing fuel prices, or to track business expenses, a gas card really can make your life easier. As fuel prices only continue to rise, the savings they offer begin to pay off more and more.

Coyote Killer 70 Road Runner

High performance and low cost were Plymouths design goals for a brand-new model in 1968. The company believed that the time was right for a factory hot rod for the youth market, and its guess was right on the money. It would have the macho name of Road Runner.

It was also a very B Body budget-friendly machine which made it another very important reason for purchasing. The high cost ruled out many of the muscle cars of the era.

Less money meant less chrome on the body, along with fewer options. In fact, those that intended their Road Runner for the drag strip sometimes ordered the Runner with the small hub-cap-style wheel covers and even deleted the radio.

A member of the Belvedere line, the new model came with a stock 383cid engine capable of 335 horsepower. But that was just the beginning, the awesome 426 Hemi and 440 Six-Barrel engines would become available the following model year.

Of course, the Hemi has been a legend for many years, but that triple-carbed 440 engine had adopted a cult following of its own. A significant body change had been planned for the 70 model, but that would be put off until the 1971 model year.

The 1970 440 continued to be capable of 390 horsepower when equipped with the so-called Air Grabber induction system. That interesting system provided a solid connection between the hood scoops and engine once the hood was closed. The sides of the pop-up Air Grabber door were eye-catching with evil-looking sharks teeth etched on the sides.

The front end was menacing-looking with the blackout grille containing twin headlights mounted in its ends. The aggressive bumper contained a pair of round parking lights on either side of the license plate.

When looking at the 70 Road Runner, and comparing it with the other garnish MOPAR muscle machines of the era, it appeared downright stripped. Oh, there was a stripe and 440+6 lettering on the hood, but that was about it. About the only eye catcher was the simulated rear-fender-scoop cut-out.

Some of the models did, however, have a dust trail that reached from near the front of the front fender and disappeared into that scoop.

The only sizable name identification externally was the Road Runner lettering contained in a stripe located on the rear end of the car, just above the tail lights. As far as engine identification, in addition to the aforementioned 440+6 designations on the hood, there was also a 440 in the rear of a hood bulge.

With that famous name, the company made the most of it with a special horn to sound like that famous cartoon bird. The horn made the Road Runner Beep Beep sound which was unmistakable.

Mike Cenky of Huber Heights, Ohio owns this 70 Road Runner hardtop with such an six-barrel 440 engine installation. A retired phone company employee, Mike acquired the four-speed model in 1988 in fair condition. I redid the powertrain and suspension system which both needed attention.

As he was restoring the Road Runner, Mike came across some interesting clues that provided firm indications of the cars early history. The engine had a scatter shield, there was an indication of once having a drag-style line-lock set-up, and the rear wheelwells had been trimmed for large racing slicks.

I bet that it made many runs down the drag strip during those days. He indicated, though, that type of activity is not in his plans for the orange beauty. Oh, I might get on it once-in-awhile, but thats about it!

Cenky did, however, make several minor changes for better driving comfort. I used a wider eight-inch rear wheel. Then too, I changed the factory 4.10 ratio rear end to a 3.54 unit which makes the car much more streetable. For a cleaner look, the small Road Runner decals-normally on the front quarters-and small chrome RR emblems on the rear quarters.

The car is coated in a flashy Tor Red color, a color which is carried to the exposed wheels which carry the small wheel covers, and in MOPAR style, also into the engine compartment. Its highlighted with that broad black hood stripe which contains the hood scoop and is outlined by two narrow stripes. There is definitely a racecar look about this stunning machine.

The car also carries the Super Track Pack which included front disc brakes, heavy duty cooling package, special cooling fan, and the Dana rear end. The interior is done in black vinyl and sports bucket seats.

Cenky explained that even though the car is 36 years old, most people at car shows know exactly what it is. I am always hearing from them that they owned one or knew somebody that did, he explained.
Mikes long been a Chrysler fan, and it comes naturally. My dad worked for the company for many years and all we ever had were Chrysler cars. And over the years,

Mike has owned a number of vintage performance MOPARs, including a 67 440 R/T, a 70 Dodge Challenger 440 Six-Pack, a 72 340 Plymouth Duster, and a 70 Chrysler 300.

There is no mistaking the look of those Chrysler-built 60s and early muscle machines, and they are certainly a favorite of mine.

And ours too!

Chevy Equinox and Land Rover Freelander

The sport utility market continues to expand despite higher than normal gas prices. The reason? Because, these do-almost-everything-vehicles provide just what consumers want. Sure, sales are down right now, but they will recover as more economical vehicles enter the mix. SUVs carry people, haul stuff, pull stuff, can go off-roading [okay, maybe not the Equinox], provide superior handling than many cars, etc. Fortunately, not all are gas guzzlers either. Chevrolets Equinox and the Land Rover Freelander are two that come to mind. Lets take a look at these two compact SUVs.

Chevrolet Equinox I like the looks of the Equinox, Chevys car-based SUV that is only slightly smaller than the mid-size TrailBlazer. By car-based I mean a vehicle that handles and drives more like a car and is actually built on a car platform [like the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4, for example]. This means that the Equinox is built chiefly for the road, so if you want an off road experience you would need to opt for the TrailBlazer or get the Freelander. Okay, I digress.

The Equinox is available as either a front wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle. Seating five passengers, the Equinox comes equipped with a 3.4L V6 that produces 185hp. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission; no manual transmission is available. A traction control system is standard with the front wheel drive Equinox while all models come equipped with ABS and electric steering. Standard equipment for the Equinox includes power windows, power mirrors, and power locks with Remote Keyless Entry; AM/FM stereo and CD player with six speakers; and air conditioning. The Equinox has received a 5 star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for frontal crash and side-impact crash tests. Starting prices for the Equinox are very competitive with comparable models in its class. Base MSRP for the FWD is just over 22K; 24K for the AWD.

Land Rover Freelander The smallest of all Land Rovers is the Freelander, a compact full time all wheel drive vehicle available as either a 3 or 5 door SUV. Unlike the Equinox, the Freelander has full off road capabilities as do every Land Rover model. The Freelander comes equipped with a Four-wheel Electronic Traction Control system; ABS; a 2.5L Quad Cam V6 engine paired with a 5 speed automatic transmission; an AM/FM stereo/CD system with RDS radio; air conditioning; fog lamps; a perimeter security system; and much more. The Freelander, a five passenger vehicle, sells for a price starting at just over 27K.

The Freelander is produced in England while the Equinox is built in Canada, In all, both the Equinox and Freelander represent well built compact SUVs with two different purposes: the Equinox is built primarily for the highway and around town and has the stronger engine, while the Freelander is built for both highway and trail.

Ford Vs Chevy: The Debate Goes On, Part 2

Price is always a big concern when purchasing a new or used vehicle. The cost of used vehicles really depends on the quality of the vehicle and the amount of miles on it. New vehicles are pricey, but Ford and Chevy often compete to get business. I can almost guarantee that if you tell the Ford dealer how much Chevy quoted you for a similar vehicle of theirs, they would meet or match the price. If they won’t, you can go to another dealer, or ask for concessions to make the deal more attractive to you.

In many areas such as price, speed, and safety, Chevy appears to have some catching up to do. One problem they have is they always seem to be following in the footsteps of Ford rather than introducing something new to attract new customers. While the age old debate between Ford and Chevy owners will continue on, it is important to base that decision on some solid facts. Just because your grand-daddy said that Ford was the best doesn’t mean that they still are. And it certainly doesn’t mean that Ford is better for the particular type of vehicle you are buying.

You can find excellent information on Ford and Chevy comparisons in Consumer Reports, safety ratings, and various online resources. Make sure you look for unbiased information though or you will end up with nothing more than the opinion of the reader.

As you can well guess, most reviewers are biased in a review like this. Safety ratings, MPG ratings and other figures are good things to look at when comparing. Don’t forget though, that there can be a good deal of variation from model to model and from year to year. So it’s very important to compare apples to apples. Don’t try to compare a 2007 Ford Explorer to a 2003 Chevy Blazer.

How Motorcycle Exhausts Cut Off Sound

If you have are in love with your bike, chances are you will be very, very particular about what sort of exhaust pipes you use. The right ones can make your machine look and feel like a million dollar baby or make it a design nightmare.

The motorcycle exhaust pipe has a very definite role to play in the dynamics of a bike. It directs the gases that come out of the combustion chamber, away from the machine and therefore the rider. Where do these gases come from and why is it important that they be directed away?

The combustion engine in a motorcycle creates a series of explosions that propel the bike forward. Since we are talking of explosive combustion, we are talking of noise and exhaust gases. Now if these gases were thrown out straight from the exhaust port, you would have a problem on your hands. The front tyres would gradually melt under the heat and whats more, your machine would sound like a disgruntled missile.

That is why bike manufacturers design the exhaust pipes carefully. These pipes take the emitted gas away from the exhaust port, pass them through what we call a muffler or a silencer and then throw them away behind the bike, away from the rider. By the time the gases pass out of the exhaust, they have already cooled off and there is little chance of any unwanted combustion.

The technology used to silence the explosive gases is simple. The gases flow at a great speed into the motorcycle exhaust pipes, which are narrow. Then they enter the muffler, which has more space. As the gases expand into the body of the muffler, they slow down and lose some of the sound energy. There are perforated baffles in the muffler that reduce the noise further. So, by the time the gases emerge from the motorcycle exhaust pipes, the noise has been cut down to a reasonable level. It is also important to remember that a good exhaust design can increase the usable power generated by your bikes engine.

Typically, motorcycle exhausts are of two kinds: the full exhaust system and the slip-on system. The full exhaust system connects the pipes to the head of the engine while the slip-on exhaust connects them to the opening where the muffler is. The former is ideal for those who run their machine at full throttle over long distance. The slip on exhaust system is usually used for street bikes. This allows a little more acceleration from the bike.

Corvette Corvette Corvette Classic Stock Or Hot-Rodded?

The introduction of the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray heralded major changes in the march onward in the Chevrolet Stingray. The Sting Ray was available as both a Roadster version with a removable hardtop and a Coupe sometimes referred to as a fastback.

Onwards from 1963 to 1967 the Sting Ray got even better with a greater number of options for both luxury and power performance. This was the heyday of the days of sports car customizers. And the Corvette Sting Ray was the perfect 100 % raw material for the sports car customizers. Headlights were molded and in and the bumpers were removed. So many Corvettes received an extra pair of taillights that people that they were actually a General Motors Chevrolet Corvette factory option. Later when the low profile wide tires came along, so did large fender flares. The speed equipment industry had boomed, so the majority of Corvette engine parts were being replaced by the latest: Hot Setup. Rochester fuel injectors were being removed because of service problems, and everyone heard that the single four barrel in a high riser manifold was better. In 1965 the first Chevy big-block was introduced in the Corvette, and the performance was more than awesome.

Another new body style both larger and heavier was introduced in 1968. Many thought that this was the beginning of the decline of the Corvette, But in the vital performance department, the 427 cubic inches Rat Motor with its three two-barrel carbs and the 435 horse power ratings more than powered the Corvette legend of lore. No letting down of the powerful image of the Vette.

Things got even better right on up to the 1969 L-88with aluminum cylinder heads the 1970 LS-6 rated at a mighty 465 horse power rating. The word Corvette invokes the image of high performance sports car performance. An older age group replaced the street racer cult as the primary consumers and purchasers of the Vette. More and more of the Corvettes were equipped with such luxury and comfort options as air conditioning, power steering and telescoping steering columns. It was not long before the Corvette with emission devices and soon the real Vette type of performance was history.

What was more than interesting was the response original hot rodder modification group. The amazing part of all of this is how the circle came round. Karma sneaks in.

The same dedicated group of sport car enthusiasts and hot rodders, who modified the older, pre mainstream luxury comfort model Corvettes, is now the very ones who restore this same converted Corvette back to exact stock specifications.

How could these people justify the work and effort of taking these cars back in time to factory specs when a great amount of time, effort and cost had been invested in these very cars? A used Corvette at the time was essentially a very attractive sports car buy.

Why were restore cars in vogue and even preferred over the earlier modified ones. Partially it was a case of limited supply and very high prices being offered by the stock type Corvettes and classic car auctions and the prices being asked in the special car groups and publications. All in all it can be said it can be a combination of the custom cars getting old and needing refurbishing and the 55 mile speed limit in the time. Perhaps as well it was a question of maturity on the kids who were the Corvette hot rodders at the time. See the influence of time, life and having a family with its change of priorities can have on the wildest kids.

Cheapest Car Insurance For Single People

The cheapest car insurance for single people might not be very cheap. If you are single, you will pay a higher premium than a married couple or a mature driver. The car insurance industry has an age limit for drivers as well. If you are a single male aged twenty-three years old, you will have a higher car insurance rate than a single male aged twenty-nine as long as you both have the same driving record and credit history.

High-risk single drivers find car insurance rates even higher. The cheapest car insurance rate for a single male under twenty-five who has a less than perfect driving record will result in a big difference in price when receiving a quote for car insurance. Car insurance companies find young single women less of a risk and can offer the cheapest car insurance when the driver has a good driving record. Many other things need to be considered when looking for insurance when you are single.

Your location that you live in determines your car insurance rate as well. If you live in an area where the traffic is higher, you will receive a higher premium verses someone that lives in a low traffic area. Low crime areas also reflect on your car insurance and if you live where the crime rate is high, this can sometimes even cause reason to deny insurance.

Your driving records reflect how much your car insurance rate will cost. If you have, speeding or drinking violations you will pay a higher car insurance rate. Insurance companies go as far back as ten years on your driving infractions. In most cases, your car insurance rate lowers as your driving record improves. For more info see http://www.autocarinsurancehelp.org/Classic_Car_Insurance/ on Classic Car Insurance.

If you live in an area with a high crime rate, you r insurance will be higher cheapest car insurance rate. You can look for the cheapest car insurance online and do some comparison-shopping to find the right policy for you.

Ford to Exit the Minivan Market?

All the car blogs lately have been speculating on the direction that the Ford Motor Company is going to take in the wake of declining sales and stiff competition. We know that Ford has too much capacity and we know that the company will be closing some key plants and laying off an as yet to be determined number of employees. What hadnt been clear is which models would be cut from the line up. Now, it appears that Ford will exit the lucrative minivan market. Thats right, Ford apparently will stick with building cars, trucks, and SUVs, and leave the minivan market to the other players.

Ever since the Chrysler Corporation invented the minivan market back in the early 1980s with its line of K-car derived minivans the Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager, and the Chrysler Town & Country Ford has been playing catch up. Indeed, a series of forgettable star named minivans were served up by Ford and summarily rejected by consumers: the Aerostar, Windstar, and the Freestar. Later, both Honda and Toyota brought out their own entries and Ford, along with Chevrolet found themselves trailing badly in an overcrowded segment. Indeed, several GM divisions sell minivans, as does Kia and Nissan, making the market especially tight.

Should Ford decide to go ahead with plans to ditch the minivan market, it wouldnt be a complete retreat. For one, many consumers prefer the automakers popular Ford Explorer SUV while its all wheel drive Freestyle wagon/crossover competes well too. Finally, another vehicle the Edge will soon make its debut and likely pull many minivan customers over. The Edge will be yet another crossover vehicle somewhat of a SUV/wagon hybrid and fill the need for consumers.

Yes, Ford appears ready to ditch the minivan market. No loss to consumers and probably a smart move for the beleaguered automaker.
